When Golden Retrievers Take Over Golden (And Why You Should Join Them)

Thousands of golden retrievers. One historic mountain town. Four glorious hours of pure, unadulterated dog joy.

If you've never experienced Goldens in Golden, buckle up—because Saturday, February 7, 2026, downtown Golden transforms into the largest golden retriever gathering in the world, and it's exactly as delightful (and wonderfully chaotic) as it sounds.

A Brief History of This Glorious Madness

Back in 2019, someone at Visit Golden had a brilliant realization: National Golden Retriever Day falls in February, and we're a town literally named Golden. How had we not been celebrating this already?

What started as a simple photo op has exploded into a full community celebration where golden retrievers and their humans meet families, explore vendors and local shops, and enjoy restaurants that open their doors to four-legged friends. Last year alone, 7,500 people and 3,000 dogs showed up—the biggest turnout since the event started.

People fly in from Tennessee, Texas, and Ohio. Some drive from across state lines. And yes, international visitors have made the trip too. All for the chance to stand under that iconic "Welcome to Golden" arch with hundreds of grinning golden retrievers.

What to Expect This Year

The 2026 event runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and trust us—you'll want to arrive early. Here's what's happening:

The Famous Group Photos: Three chances to get the money shot under the Welcome Arch at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., and noon. Fair warning: your phone storage will cry for mercy.

Free Shuttles: Park free at The Splash at Fossil Trace and ride dog-friendly shuttles straight to Parfet Park. No wrestling for downtown parking spots with 7,500 of your closest friends.

Two Vendor Villages: Double the vendors this year, spread across two locations to give everyone more room to breathe (and sniff).

Games, Contests & Pup-up Fun: Activities all morning at Parfet Park and the Goldens in Golden Pup-up Tent.

Dog-Friendly Everything: Washington Avenue closes to traffic and fills with proud pup parents and excited goldens in bandanas, sweaters, tutus, and plenty of winter fluff.

And here's the thing about February in Colorado: we could get sunshine and 60 degrees, or we could get a blizzard. Two years ago, heavy snow pounded Jefferson County during the event. Did anyone leave? Absolutely not. If anything, the photos were even better with snow-covered golden retrievers.

Kid-Friendly, Dog-Friendly, Human-Friendly

This is genuinely one of the most family-friendly events we've got. Kids go absolutely bonkers petting hundreds of gentle goldens. Toddlers waddle through seas of wagging tails. And yes, all well-behaved, leashed dogs are welcome—not just golden retrievers. We've seen pit mixes, silver labradors, and once, memorably, a dog named Toast who met a dog named Biscuit.

After the official event wraps at 1 p.m., the party continues all weekend long at Golden's dog-friendly breweries, restaurants, and trails. This town was already one of Colorado's most pet-friendly destinations, and during Goldens in Golden weekend, we basically become Dog Paradise.

The Golden Connection You Didn't Know About

Here's where it gets interesting: Golden wasn't named for the dog breed. The town got its name during the 1859 gold rush—either from prospector Thomas L. Golden or from the "golden" opportunities the area promised (historians still argue about this).

What's not up for debate? In 1862, barely three years after being founded, Golden became the capital of the entire Colorado Territory. Legislators walked these same downtown streets. The territorial capitol stood where Colorado School of Mines now sits. And that creek where you'll be strolling with your pup? Clear Creek powered Adolph Coors' brewery when he opened it in 1873.

So when thousands of golden retrievers parade past these historic buildings each February, they're walking through streets that saw gunfights, political kidnappings (yes, really), and the birth of one of America's largest brewing empires.
